In the northern part of the Sporades islands you will find Alonissos Island. The island is noted for its natural beauty and golden sea beaches with white foaming waves breaking on the shores. The water is the cleanest in the country. That is why it has been named as a marine part. It is full of the rare species of sea lives like the monk seal and the Monachus.
The island has a rich heritage and cultural background. It also has a large chain of hotels where the tourists can resort. However the most important part of the island is the golden beaches that are the main attraction for the tourists and people coming over here to buy villa.
Alonisoss also has an old capital that is about four Kms away from the present new capital. The old one is a beautiful village with traditional houses for sale that are whitewashed and the streets that are narrow and paved. Hora, a village which is rich in natural splendor, was the capital of this island till 1965. A massive earthquake that took place in 1965 devastated the area. The people left the ruined village and settled at Patitiri.
The old capital that was built on hill top offered an incredible overview of the Aegean sea. It also overlooked the island of Skopelos. Repair and restoration work was taken up after the earthquake by the foreigners who transformed many ruined buildings into beautiful restaurants and shops thus restoring to a large extent the shape of the original village.
